Business Nokia attracts Huawei interest

After trying and failing to sell its handset business to Microsoft, Nokia has now attracted takeover interest from Huawei.

“We are considering these sorts of acquisitions; maybe the combination has some synergies but depends on the willingness of Nokia,” Richard Yu, chairman of Huawei’s consumer business group, tells the FT.

Bad news for Nokia’s OS suppler and partner Microsoft is that Yu reckons Windows Phone is ‘weak’ and pointed out that the OS needs a licence fee unlike the free Android OS which is used by Huawei’s phones.

The US government has warned against buying Huawei network infrastructure because of security issues.

If Huawei buys Nokia this could become an issue because Nokia is currently buying Siemens’ share of network infrastructure supplier Nokia-Siemens Networks.
