General Samsung builds Silicon Valley fab

Samsung broke ground yesterday on a new fab in San Jose. This is unusual in that new fabs are rarely built in Silicon Valley these days. Intel closed its last Silicon Valley fab in 2008.

The Samsung fab will be an R&D facility and sales office. It will have 680,000 square foot of usable area and employ 600 people.

“I truly believe this new campus will provide the world’s best convenience and comfort for our employees,” said Charlie Bae, the president of Samsung Semiconductor Inc. ar the ceremony.

“This facility will play a very important role in expanding our R&D capabilities in Silicon Valley,” said OH Kwon, the vice chairman and CEO of Samsung Electronics.

The san Jose fab is expected to run wafers in 2015.

Samsung has a big production fab in Austin, Texas where it announced plans to invest $4 billion last year.
