LED Lighting Graduate designs LED light for African emergencies

This is an LED-based emergency light, intended for areas in Africa with no mains electricity.

Penned by Cardiff Metropolitan University product design graduate Graham Scutt, it has been funded by Cardiff-based LED lighting wholesaler Sedna LED.

The aim was to design a lamp for medical procedures and emergencies, particularly child birth

“Africa does not have a reliable electricity network, let alone a street lighting system in rural areas. Approximately one quarter of the sub-Saharan African population has access to electricity and according to the World Bank, 2013 “There is just enough electricity generated now to power one light bulb per person 3 hours a day”, making blackouts in rural areas a common occurrence,” said Senda.

According to Senda MD Nathan Edwards, the light has been prototyped, and is now being evaluated for its intended use.
