Densitron and Designworks Windsor have developed an NFC-based permanent baggage tag for British Airways.

The new bag tag can be used multiple times and removes the need to print and attach traditional paper tags.

Flyers hold their smartphone over the electronic tag which automatically updates with a unique barcode containing their flight details and a statement of their bag’s destination.
Once the image is fixed on the tag the battery turns off. The tags last about five years.

Trials of the bag tags are expected to take place next month at Heathrow Airport.
