Business ST to close its former Inmos design centre Bristol site

Bristol ST - R&D STMicroelectronics is to close its Bristol site which was first established 35 years ago as Inmos’ design centre.

ST says:

“We did announce to employees on Wednesday our plan to discontinue operations at our Bristol site in Q1 2014.
This decision is part of our already-announced strategy to transform our digital convergence business to become sustainably profitable as quickly as possible and to target growth areas where we lead or can lead.
With the planned closure of Bristol, UPD activities will be concentrated in fewer sites, with the aim to decrease time-to-market and improve execution of our new products.
There will be no disruption or delay to our committed roadmap and customer engagements.
ST will put in place measures in order to minimize the impact on Bristol employees.
We are about to start consulting with them and therefore are not ready to disclose any additional details at this stage.”

“Overall, DCG priorities for 2013 are unchanged from May,” says ST:
i) continue the deployment of new products (new Class2, Orly, Cannes, Alicante, Athena)
ii) gain share in the US market (cable, gateway, connected STBs)
iii) exploit the potential of FDSOI in ASIC – already showing significant progress with a strong design-in pipeline
iv) and execute on the $600 million plan: Unified processing platform; no merchant silicon for TV or mobile; optimized R&D structure.

Power 200W brushless motor driver reference design has PFC

19jun13Fairchild Fairchild has developed a 200W brushless dc (BLDC) motor controller reference design with power factor correction.

Called RD-401, it has an input voltage range of 90-264Vac, or up to 400Vdc.

Components used are:

FCM8531 3-phase brushless dc motor controller

FSB50550A mosfet/driver module

FAN6961 PFC controller

FSL306LRN ac/dc psu controller

Firmware is available, and there is a development environment.

“This reference design is fully-functional and includes all of the circuitry required for running a motor,” said Fairchild sales director Jian Wang. “Customers only need to connect three wires to the motor. Furthermore, the PFC can be disabled by simply disconnecting the jumper, allowing customers to easily assess whether PFC benefits performance. A debugging and development interface allows for further adjustment and optimisation.”

Business Memory industry set to change

Memory looks like being the place to be in the chip industry.

As DRAM consolidates around Samsung, Micron/Elpida and Hynix, and Flash consolidates around Samsung, Toshiba and Hynix, it is clear that the game has changed.

Until now, it was in the interest of the large players to over-supply the market which kept prices low, so impoverishing the weaker players and eventually forcing them out of business.

Now it’s in the interest of the major players to under-supply the market to keep prices high and force the end product manufacturers to give more of the systems industry’s value-added to the memory suppliers.

A sign of the new memory age is that overall memory capex is set to fall by 2.6% to $12.3 billion this year, according to HMC Investment Services.

Ever since the Japanese bombed the DRAM market with massive over-supply in 1984/5 when all the US producers except TI and Micron pulled out of the DRAM business, memory has been a problematic place to be.

Now that’s going to change.

Business Qualcomm completes Sharp investment

2013/06/25

Qualcomm now owns 3.5% of Sharp, following the payment of the second $60 million tranche of its $120 million investment in the cash-strapped Japanese company.

Samsung also has a 3% stake, bought in March for $105 million.

Last year Sharp almost did a deal with China’s Hon Hai, the parent company of Foxconn, to sell 10% of the company for $800m.

That deal was said to have fallen through because Hon Hai wanted some element of management control.

Sharp has $12.76bn of debt of which $4.25bn is due within 12 months. It has cash of $2.75bn and is expecting a loss of $5.1bn this financial year.

Last November, Sharp put its Osaka HQ and its 9% stake in Panasonic up as collateral for a $4.6bn bank loan.

Research Space: Shenzhou-10 launch prefigures China building its own space station

NASA ISS China successfully launched the Shenzhou-10 spacecraft yesterday, lofting three astronauts on a 15-day mission to learn how to rendezvous and dock with an orbiting module. The mission is the last of three scheduled experiments designed to help astronauts master the skills for building and operating a space station.

The mission marks the end of the beginning of China’s slow but steady approach to human space flight. Right now, the country is not doing anything revolutionary. But progress so far suggests that more advanced plans, such as a moon base or a crewed Martian trek, may not be beyond China’s reach.

In a press conference on Monday, a spokeswoman for the Chinese human space programme, Wu Ping, announced that Shenzhou-10 will lift off at 0938 UTC from the Jinquan Satellite Launch Centre in the Gobi desert, according to the Chinese news service Xinhua. The capsule will carry two men, Nie Haisheng and Zhang Xiaoguang, and one woman, Wang Yaping.

The astronauts will rendezvous with the Tiangong 1 (Heavenly Palace 1) space module, which has been orbiting Earth since September 2011. The crew will do one automatic and one manual docking test. They will also run medical and technical tests and broadcast a science lesson to Chinese students from orbit.

The launch continues the execution of an orderly programme laid out in the 1990s, says Joan Johnson-Freese of the US Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island.

“It’s a slow, incremental programme, but it’s also very ambitious,” she says. China started with the uncrewed launch of the Shenzhou 1 spacecraft in 1999 and continued with its first crewed launch in 2003. This week’s lift-off marks their fifth human mission in 10 years.

The ultimate goal is to build a space station by 2020. What China plans to do with the space station is still unclear, and they may need a new heavy launch vehicle called the Long March 5 in order to build it.

There is a good chance they can make it happen, in part because China’s approach has been markedly different from the frenetic space race between the US and the USSR in the 1960s and ’70s, says Johnson-Freese.

“There was a space race between the US and Russia because we each started at the same place. But for China there’s no race [with the US], because we’re at very different starting positions,” she says.

The two countries also have different political attitudes towards space exploration. “What we have seen more than anything else is a truly long-term commitment to space that dates back at least 25 years, and a sustained interest during those 25 years,” says Dean Cheng of the Heritage Foundation, a conservative policy research group in Washington DC.

By contrast, NASA’s human spaceflight programme has struggled under changing budgets and political whims. Plans to return to the moon under George W. Bush’s administration, for instance, morphed into crewed missions to an asteroid under Barack Obama’s presidency.

When it comes to sending humans beyond Earth orbit, China’s unwavering goals may see it beat other space powers like the US to the punch, says Cheng. “So as long as the money holds out and political stability reigns, they might well get to some place like Mars or establish a lunar presence, precisely because they are persistent and willing to spend the money and make the effort.”

Business UMC joins ISDA for 10nm

UMC has joined the IBM Technology Development Alliance as a participant in the development of 10nm CMOS process technology.

The agreements between UMC and IBM expand upon their 2012 agreements for earlier nodes, including 14nm finfet.

UMC will send an engineering team to join the 10nm development work that will take place in in Albany, New York.

UMC will continue to improve its internally developed 14nm finfet process at its Tainan, Taiwan R&D site.

Business H1 collapse in mobile PC shipments

IHS 2013-07-08_Mobile_PC Worldwide mobile PC shipments in Q2 shrank 6.9 percent compared to Q2, the worst Q2 performance in 11 years, according to IHS.

It was the first time the industry experienced a sequential decline since Q2 2002. At that time, mobile PC shipments contracted 3.7 percent after the dot.com bust flattened global demand.

In the 10 years between those two low points, the mobile PC space had always strengthened in the second quarter as shipments recovered from a normally soft start to the year.

Excluding 2002 and this year, growth for every second quarter during the intervening years had ranged from 0.5 percent to as much as 6.5 percent, as shown in the attached figure. Just last year, the industry enjoyed a 3.9 percent increase for the period.

2013 was the worst since 2003, with an 11.2 percent fall compared to H1 2012.

‘Innovation in PCs has stagnated, and the recent influx of low-cost tablets has further eaten into an already decimated mobile PC space,’ says IHS.

Research Science: Shrinking Gorilla phone glass and interatomic forces

Douglas Allan Contrary to urban legend, the glass in cathedral windows doesn’t flow like fluids. But the “Gorilla Glass” of smartphone and tablet screens has been caught moving.

Glass feels solid, but its atoms are arranged randomly, as in a liquid. This dual-personality led to the idea that glass might flow like a fluid, and over hundreds of years, could account for the uneven thicknesses of windows in medieval cathedrals. But this idea was disproved in the 1990s.

Now Doug Allan (pictured) and colleagues at Corning, the New York-based company that makes super-tough Gorilla Glass, have watched a 1-metre-square sheet of the stuff shrink by 5 micrometres in both width and length, in just 10 days. The process then slowed, taking 18 months to shrink another 5 micrometres.

Allan attributes the movement to sodium and potassium atoms, added to make the glass more durable. When the glass is first made, these atoms are in energetically unfavourable positions. Once they find more favourable spots, interatomic forces trap them, reducing the overall movement, and therefore the size, of a sheet.

The shrinkage is too small to pose a problem to smartphone owners, says Allan. But it is the first measurement of such movement in glass.

Intriguingly, the rate of movement seems to follow a mathematical power law predicted by James Phillips of Rutgers University in Piscataway, New Jersey, for atomic rearrangements in glass nearly two decades ago. “This is gorgeous work,” says Phillips, who is delighted by the experimental support for his theory.

“Experimentally it is tour de force,” says Peter Wolynes of Rice University in Houston, Texas, who was not involved in the study. However, Wolynes does not think the data are precise enough to validate Phillips’s mathematical theory of atomic rearrangement.

EDA and IP X-FAB goes with Cadence for analogue/mixed-signal design flow

Dresden168_05 German foundry X-FAB Silicon Foundries has introduced a reference kit supporting advanced methodology for analogue/mixed-signal chip design.

The kit, which is based on the mixed-signal flow from Cadence Design Systems, will be used for constraint-driven design, mixed-signal simulation, floorplanning, schematic-driven layout, automated routing, timing-driven digital block implementation and sign-off.

The Kit includes an OpenAccess PDK to enable mixed-signal designs for 180nm and other technologies.

The A/MS Reference Kit covers a number of Cadence design tools and flows for analogue IC prototyping and analogue IC layout automation, full-chip A/MS simulation, analogue-on-top mixed-signal implementation, automated custom routing, and digital block implementation.

“The new A/MS Reference Kit is a result of our close technical collaboration with X-FAB,” said Dr. Chi-Ping Hsu, senior v-p for R&D at Cadence.

“Today’s tight project schedules and time-to-market constraints require the best use of available EDA tools, and more automation for all design tasks,” said Thomas Ramsch, director design support at X-FAB.

Materials RD UK scientists store big data in quartz in 5D

5D_optical_memory Scientists at the University of Southampton have experimentally demonstrated a digital data recording processes which they say will allow data storage up to 360Tbyte on a single optical disc with “practically unlimited lifetime”.

The process involved recording digital data using femtosecond laser writing on nanostructures created in fused quartz, which is able to store vast quantities of data.

The information encoding is realised in five dimensions: the size and orientation in addition to the three dimensional position of these nanostructures.

In the experiment at Southampton, a 300kbit digital copy of a text file was successfully recorded in 5D using ultrafast laser, producing extremely short and intense pulses of light. The file is written in three layers of nanostructured dots separated by five micrometres (one millionth of a metre).

The researchers used self-assembled nanostructures which change the way light travels through glass, modifying polarisation of light that can then be read by combination of optical microscope and a polariser, similar to that found in Polaroid sunglasses.

The research is led by the ORC researcher Jingyu Zhang and conducted under a joint project with Eindhoven University of Technology.

“We are developing a very stable and safe form of portable memory using glass, which could be highly useful for organisations with big archives. At the moment companies have to back up their archives every five to ten years because hard-drive memory has a relatively short lifespan,” said Jingyu.

“Museums who want to preserve information or places like the national archives where they have huge numbers of documents, would really benefit.”

The Physical Optics group from the ORC presented their paper at the photonics industry’s renowned Conference on Lasers and Electro-Optics (CLEO’13) in San Jose.

The paper, ‘5D Data Storage by Ultrafast Laser Nanostructuring in Glass’ was presented by the during CLEO’s prestigious post deadline session.

Business Dialog buys iWatt

iWatt chip iWatt, the innovative Californian power management IC company, has been bought by Dialog Semiconductor for $310m.

Dialog says that the acquisition increases its TAM (total available market) by up to $6 billion by 2015 by getting the company into the digital power management business.

iWatt had FY2012 revenue of $74 million (growth of 46% over FY2011) and FY2012 gross margin of 49%.

iWatt has 180 employees. Its PrimAccurate technology sells into AC/DC conversion and LED applications.
