LED Lighting Graduate designs LED light for African emergencies

2013/07/19

24jul13Senda2This is an LED-based emergency light, intended for areas in Africa with no mains electricity.

Penned by Cardiff Metropolitan University product design graduate Graham Scutt, it has been funded by Cardiff-based LED lighting wholesaler Sedna LED.

The aim was to design a lamp for medical procedures and emergencies, particularly child birth

24jul13Senda“Africa does not have a reliable electricity network, let alone a street lighting system in rural areas. Approximately one quarter of the sub-Saharan African population has access to electricity and according to the World Bank, 2013 “There is just enough electricity generated now to power one light bulb per person 3 hours a day”, making blackouts in rural areas a common occurrence,” said Senda.

According to Senda MD Nathan Edwards, the light has been prototyped, and is now being evaluated for its intended use.

Business Morris Chang to retire next year

Business Morris Chang to retire next year

2013/07/19

The semiconductor industry’s top CEO, Morris Chang, says he’ll retire next year. It’s the second time Chang has retired. In 2005 Chang announced he was stepping down as CEO but he came back in 2009 at a time of crisis

Chang, a veteran of TI and former CEO of General Instrument, will become Chairman of TSMC when he gives up the CEO job.

At 82, Chang has had a remarkable career. He got his PhD from Stanford and was regarded as a formidably tough boss at TI.

When he went to head Taiwan’s government research institute ITRI in 1985, he helped hatch the plans that spawned TSMC in 1987.

Who can fill Chang’s shoes? No one probably, which may be why Chang indicated last year that he may appoint more than one CEO when he goes.

Graphene 'onion rings' have delicious potential

Graphene 'onion rings' have delicious potential

July 18, 2013 — Concentric hexagons of graphene grown in a furnace at Rice University represent the first time anyone has synthesized graphene nanoribbons on metal from the bottom up -- atom by atom.

Share This:

As seen under a microscope, the layers brought onions to mind, said Rice chemist James Tour, until a colleague suggested flat graphene could never be like an onion.

"So I said, 'OK, these are onion rings,'" Tour quipped.

The name stuck, and the remarkable rings that chemists marveled were even possible are described in a new paper in the Journal of the American Chemical Society.

The challenge was to figure out how such a thing could grow, Tour said. Usually, graphene grown in a hot furnace by chemical vapor deposition starts on a seed -- a speck of dust or a bump on a copper or other metallic surface. One carbon atom latches onto the seed in a process called nucleation and others follow to form the familiar chicken-wire grid.

Experiments in Tour's lab to see how graphene grows under high pressure and in a hydrogen-rich environment produced the first rings. Under those conditions, Tour, Rice theoretical physicist Boris Yakobson and their teams found that the entire edge of a fast-growing sheet of graphene becomes a nucleation site when hydrogenated. The edge lets carbon atoms get under the graphene skin, where they start a new sheet.

But because the top graphene grows so fast, it eventually halts the flow of carbon atoms to the new sheet underneath. The bottom stops growing, leaving a graphene ring. Then the process repeats.

"The mechanism relies on that top layer to stop carbon from reaching the bottom so easily," Tour said. "What we get are a multiple of single crystals growing one on top of the other."

The Tour lab pioneered the bulk manufacture of single-atom-thick graphene nanoribbons in 2009 with the discovery that carbon nanotubes could be chemically "unzipped" into long, thin sheets. Nanoribbons are being studied for use in batteries and advanced electronics and as heat sinks.

"Usually you make a ribbon by taking a large thing and cutting it down," Tour said. "But if you can grow a ribbon from the bottom up, you could have control of the edges." The atomic configuration at the edge helps determine graphene's electrical properties. The edges of hexagonal graphene onion rings are zigzags, which make the rings metallic.

"The big news here," he said, "is that we can change relative pressures of the growth environment of hydrogen versus carbon and get entirely new structures. This is dramatically different from regular graphene."

Graduate student Zheng Yan, a member of Tour's lab and lead author of the paper, discovered the new route to nanoribbons while experimenting with graphene growth under hydrogen pressurized to varying degrees. The sweet spot for rings was at 500 Torr, he said.

Further testing found the microscopic rings formed underneath and not on top of the sheet, and Yakobson's lab confirmed the growth mechanism through first-principle calculations. Yan also determined the top sheet of graphene could be stripped away with argon plasma, leaving stand-alone rings.

The width of the rings, which ranged from 10 to 450 nanometers, also affects their electronic properties, so finding a way to control it will be one focus of continued research, Tour said. "If we can consistently make 10-nanometer ribbons, we can begin to gate them and turn them into low-voltage transistors," he said. They may also be suitable for lithium storage for advanced lithium ion batteries, he said.

Co-authors of the paper are Rice graduate students Yuanyue Liu, Zhiwei Peng, Changsheng Xiang, Abdul-Rahman Raji and Errol Samuel; postdoctoral researchers Jian Lin, Gunuk Wang and Haiqing Zhou; Rice alumna Elvira Pembroke; and Professor Ting Yu of Nanyang Technological University. Tour is the T.T. and W.F. Chao Chair in Chemistry as well as a professor of mechanical engineering and materials science and of computer science at Rice. Yakobson is the Karl F. Hasselmann Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science and professor of chemistry.

The Singapore National Research Foundation, the Office of Naval Research, the Lockheed Martin LANCER IV program and the Air Force Office of Scientific Research supported the work. Calculations were performed on the National Science Foundation-supported DaVinCI supercomputer at Rice, the National Institute for Computational Sciences' Kraken and the National Energy Research Scientific Computing Center's Hopper.

Best romantic singers are male bats

Best romantic singers are male bats

July 18, 2013 — Male bats appear to be the sexy singers of the animal world: they have learned to vocalize in a specific way to attract females, but once they have their attention, they change their tune -- literally. They then produce a more creative array of sounds to entertain and keep the females interested, according to new research conducted at Texas A&M University.

Share This:

Mike Smotherman, associate professor of biology and one of the country's leading authorities on bat behavior, and colleagues from Florida International University led the study on bat singing and their work is published in Animal Behaviour.

Over a three-year period, the team made recordings of thousands of Mexican free-tailed bats in and around the Texas A&M campus and found that male bats are truly crooners. They produce songs aimed at attracting females to their roosts during mating season, and they must do so quickly because bats tend to fly by in a hurry.

"These bats can fly very fast, almost 30 feet per second," explains Smotherman. "They only have about one-tenth of a second to get the females' attention.

"We learned that they use a very specific song to grab the female's attention as she flies by the roost. Once a bat joins their roost, the males mix up their songs, possibly to keep the females entertained long enough for mating to begin."

The bat's romantic song is built from syllables and phrases. The free-tailed bats are unique because they can quickly reorganize their phrases to create different singing styles, Smotherman says.

"The males can be very creative in their singing," he adds.

Bats aren't the only type of animal to use such love songs, Smotherman notes. The free-tailed bat's singing is very similar to some of the most talented songbirds. Among mammals however, singing is rare, he notes.

"Most other animals rely upon visual cues to attract a mate, such as birds having brightly colored feathers," he adds. "With bats, it's all about sounds, which may be why bats use singing more than other mammals."

Bat singing appears to work, at least in Texas. The state is home to some of the largest bat colonies in the world, with tens of millions of bats winging through Texas at sunset. Each bat can consume immense quantities of insects as they try to find a home under bridges, in caves, barns or numerous other places that provide a dark place in which to reside.

The Mexican free-tailed bat is one of the most common bat species, measuring about four inches in length with a wingspan of about 10 to 12 inches. Dark brown in color with rounded ears, the bats are frequently seen in the southwest United States but are also common in Central and South America.

Microbes can influence evolution of their hosts

Microbes can influence evolution of their hosts

These microscopic fellow travelers are collectively called the microbiome. Realization that every species of plant and animal is accompanied by a distinctive microbiome is old news. But evidence of the impact that these microbes have on their hosts continues to grow rapidly in areas ranging from brain development to digestion to defense against infection to producing bodily odors.

Now, contrary to current scientific understanding, it also appears that our microbial companions play an important role in evolution. A new study, published online on July 18 by the journal Science, has provided direct evidence that these microbes can contribute to the origin of new species by reducing the viability of hybrids produced between males and females of different species.

This study provides the strongest evidence to date for the controversial hologenomic theory of evolution, which proposes that the object of Darwin's natural selection is not just the individual organism as he proposed, but the organism plus its associated microbial community. (The hologenome encompasses the genome of the host and the genomes of its microscopic symbiotes.)

"It was a high-risk proposition. The expectation in the field was that the origin of species is principally driven by genetic changes in the nucleus. Our study demonstrates that both the nuclear genome and the microbiome must be considered in a unified framework of speciation," said Associate Professor of Biological Sciences Seth Bordenstein who performed the study with post-doctoral fellow Robert Brucker.

They conducted their research using three species of the jewel wasp Nasonia. These tiny, match-head sized wasps parasitize blowflies and other pest flies, which make them useful for biological control.

"The wasps have a microbiome of 96 different groups of microorganisms," said Brucker. Two of the species they used (N. giraulti and N. longicornis) only diverged about 400,000 years ago so they are closely related genetically. This closeness is also reflected in their microbiomes, which are quite similar. The third species (N. vitripennis), on the other hand, diverged about a million years ago so there are greater differences in both its genome and microbiome, he explained.

The mortality of hybrid offspring from the two closely related species was relatively low, about 8 percent, while the mortality rate of hybrid offspring between either of them and N. vitripennis was quite high, better than 90 percent, the researchers established.

"The microbiomes of viable hybrids looked extremely similar to those of their parents, but the microbiomes of those that did not survive looked chaotic and totally different," Brucker reported.

The researchers showed that the incompatibilities that were killing the hybrids had a microbial basis by raising the wasps in a microbe-free environment. They were surprised to find that the germ-free hybrids survived just as well as purebred larvae. But when they gave the germ-free hybrids gut microbes from regular hybrids, their survival rate plummeted.

"Our results move the controversy of hologenomic evolution from an idea to an observed phenomenon," said Bordenstein. "The question is no longer whether the hologenome exists, but how common it is?"

This research was supported by award DEB 1046149 from the National Science Foundation's Dimensions of Biodiversity program.

Snow in an infant solar system: A frosty landmark for planet and comet formation

Snow in an infant solar system: A frosty landmark for planet and comet formation

The results are published today in Science Express.

Astronomers using the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array have taken the first ever image of the snow line in an infant solar system. On Earth, snow lines form at high altitudes where falling temperatures turn the moisture in the air into snow. This line is clearly visible on a mountain, where the snow-capped summit ends and the rocky face begins.

The snow lines around young stars form in a similar way, in the distant, colder reaches of the dusty discs from which solar systems form. Starting from the star and moving outwards, water (H2O) is the first to freeze, forming the first snow line. Further out from the star, as temperatures drop, more exotic molecules can freeze and turn to snow, such as carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), and carbon monoxide (CO). These different snows give the dust grains a sticky outer coating and play an essential role in helping the grains to overcome their usual tendency to break up in collisions, allowing them to become the crucial building blocks of planets and comets. The snow also increases how much solid matter is available and may dramatically speed up the planetary formation process.

Each of these different snow lines -- for water, carbon dioxide, methane and carbon monoxide -- may be linked to the formation of particular kinds of planets [1]. Around a Sun-like star in a solar system like our own, the water snow line would correspond to a distance between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter, and the carbon monoxide snow line would correspond to the orbit of Neptune.

The snow line spotted by ALMA is the first glimpse of the carbon monoxide snow line, around TW Hydrae, a young star 175 light-years away from Earth. Astronomers believe this budding solar system shares many of the same characteristics of the Solar System when it was just a few million years old.

"ALMA has given us the first real picture of a snow line around a young star, which is extremely exciting because of what it tells us about the very early period in the history of the Solar System," said Chunhua "Charlie" Qi (Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, Cambridge, USA) one of the two lead authors of the paper. "We can now see previously hidden details about the frozen outer reaches of another solar system similar to our own."

But the presence of a carbon monoxide snow line could have greater consequences than just the formation of planets. Carbon monoxide ice is needed to form methanol, which is a building block of the more complex organic molecules that are essential for life. If comets ferried these molecules to newly forming Earth-like planets, these planets would then be equipped with the ingredients necessary for life.

Before now, snow lines had never been imaged directly because they always form in the relatively narrow central plane of a protoplanetary disc, so their precise location and extent could not be determined. Above and below the narrow region where snow lines exist, the star's radiation prevents ice formation. The dust and gas concentration in the central plane is necessary to insulate the area from the radiation so that carbon monoxide and other gases can cool and freeze.

This team of astronomers succeeded in peering inside this disc to where the snow has formed with the help of a clever trick. Instead of looking for the snow -- as it cannot be observed directly -- they searched for a molecule known as diazenylium (N2H+), which shines brightly in the millimetre portion of the spectrum, and so is a perfect target for a telescope such as ALMA. The fragile molecule is easily destroyed in the presence of carbon monoxide gas, so would only appear in detectable amounts in regions where carbon monoxide had become snow and could no longer destroy it. In essence, the key to finding carbon monoxide snow lies in finding diazenylium.

ALMA's unique sensitivity and resolution has allowed the astronomers to trace the presence and distribution of diazenylium and find a clearly defined boundary approximately 30 astronomical units from the star (30 times the distance between Earth and Sun). This gives, in effect, a negative image of the carbon monoxide snow in the disc surrounding TW Hydrae, which can be used to see the carbon monoxide snow line precisely where theory predicts it should be -- the inner rim of the diazenylium ring.

"For these observations we used only 26 of ALMA's eventual full complement of 66 antennas. Indications of snow lines around other stars are already showing up in other ALMA observations, and we are convinced that future observations with the full array will reveal many more of these and provide further, exciting insights into the formation and evolution of planets. Just wait and see," concludes Michiel Hogerheijde from Leiden Observatory, the Netherlands.

Bearing witness to the phenomenon of symmetric cell division

July 18, 2013 — Writing in his journal about the scientists of his era, Henry David Thoreau bemoaned their blindness to significant phenomena: "The question is not what you look at, but what you see." More than 150 years later, his words still ring true.

For more than a century, scientists have been peering through microscopes, carefully watching cells divide. Until now, however, none has actually seen how human cells manage to divide into two equally-sized daughter cells during mitosis.

"This is so obvious when you look at it, but no one ever noticed it," says Whitehead Institute Member Iain Cheeseman, referring to the work of postdoctoral researcher Tomomi Kiyomitsu. "With careful, visual inspection of dividing cells, you see this observation screaming out at you, but no one ever noticed it was there."

Earlier this year, Kiyomitsu, working in Cheeseman's lab, saw that during the metaphase cell cycle step a dividing cell uses the motor protein dynein and two signals to perfectly align the cell's mitotic spindle structure in the middle of the cell. The mitotic spindle is composed of thread-like proteins, called microtubules, which extend from one of two spindle poles on either side of the cell to the duplicated chromosomes in the cell's center. Other microtubules connecting the spindle poles to the cortex -- a protein layer lining the cell's outer membrane -- act to pull the spindle poles back and forth within the cell until the spindle and chromosomes align down the center axis of the cell.

Kiyomitsu's latest work focuses on the next step of mitosis, called anaphase, when the microtubules tear the paired chromosomes apart so that one copy of each chromosome ends up in each of the new daughter cells. His findings are published in this week's issue of the journal Cell.

When cells enter the final stage of cell division, the point where the cell membrane pinches together depends on the position of the mitotic spindle. If the position is in the middle of the cell, the cells divide symmetrically. All human cell lines growing in tissue culture dishes, and about 95% of cells in a human being, split evenly, resulting in daughter cells of equal size. If the spindle is off-center, the daughter cells will be sized differently. Although unequal division occurs among stem cells -- allowing one daughter cell to remain a stem cell while the other matures into another cell type, such as a skin or muscle cell -- the goal of a normal symmetric cell division is to generate identical daughter cells and increase cell number. An asymmetric cell division in non-stem cells can instead result in two daughter cells with very different fates, such as one large cell that reinitiates cell division prematurely and a much smaller cell that either grows very slowly or dies.

In approximately 43% of the dividing human cells Kiyomitsu observed, the middle of the mitotic spindle was properly centered at the beginning of anaphase. In about 31% of the cells, the protein motor dynein pulled an off-center spindle toward the middle of the cell during anaphase, correcting its position. Importantly, this ability of dynein to drive these movements required a new plasma membrane targeting mechanism in addition to the ones that Kiyomitsu and others had previously witnessed during metaphase.

Despite this hard work from dynein, in roughly one-quarter of the cells observed, the spindle was misaligned, even after the paired chromosomes were pulled to opposite sides of the cell in late anaphase. Surprisingly, as Kiyomitsu watched these cells divide further, he noticed that they were able to correct this problem by adjusting their cell membranes relative to the spindle, instead of shifting their spindles within the cell.

Mitotic cells growing in a dish are normally plump and round. However, as they complete the division process, they flatten, and the cell membranes extend evenly on both sides to accommodate spindle elongation. But in the misaligned cells, Kiyomitsu observed that the cell membrane extends only on the side closest to the spindle, thereby centering the spindle.

According to Cheeseman, this phenomenon takes place in virtually every plate of dividing human cells, yet no one else has taken note that in a quarter of those cells, the cell membrane grows only to one side in order to correct a potentially disastrous situation. Together, the dynein motor and the controlled cell extension allow the cell to precisely center its spindle for an even division every time.

For the future, Kiyomitsu is interested in focusing on those few cells that do not divide symmetrically.

"I'd like to see what's different in asymmetric cell division," he says. "This process contributes to about 200 different cell types in humans and other mammals, but analyzing them will be difficult, because they will need to be studied in a tissue."

Chimpanzees and orangutans remember distant past events

Chimpanzees and orangutans remember distant past events

It seems we have more in common with our primate cousins than we thought, specifically when it comes to our autobiographical memories, the researchers say.

"Our data and other emerging evidence keep challenging the idea of non-human animals being stuck in time," says Gema Martin-Ordas of Aarhus University in Denmark. "We show not only that chimpanzees and orangutans remember events that happened two weeks or three years ago, but also that they can remember them even when they are not expecting to have to recall those events at a later time."

The chimpanzees and orangutans in the study could also distinguish between similar past events in which the same tasks, locations, and people were involved, she adds. "This is a crucial finding since it implies that our subjects were able to bind the different elements of very similar events -- including task, tool, experimenter. This idea of 'binding' has been considered to be a crucial component of autobiographical memories."

When presented with a particular setup, chimpanzees and orangutans instantaneously remembered where to search for tools and the location of a tool they had seen only once. The researchers note in particular the complexity and speed of the primates' recall ability.

"I was surprised to find out not only that they remembered the event that took place three years ago, but also that they did it so fast!" Martin-Ordas says. "On average it took them five seconds to go and find the tools. Again this is very telling because it shows that they were not just walking around the rooms and suddenly saw the boxes and searched for the tools inside them. More probably, it was the recalled event that enabled them to find the tools directly."

She says the new findings are just the beginning of a completely new line of research on memories for past events in non-human animals.

European fish stocks poised for recovery

European fish stocks poised for recovery

July 18, 2013 — The results of a major international effort to assess the status of dozens of European fish stocks find that many of those stocks in the northeast Atlantic are being fished sustainably today and that, given time, those populations should continue to recover. The findings, reported in the Cell Press journal Current Biology on July 18, come as surprisingly good news amid widespread criticism that the European Union's Common Fisheries Policy is failing, the researchers say.

"Contrary to common perception, the status of our fish stocks is improving," says Paul Fernandes of the University of Aberdeen. "Many of our stocks are not overfished; nature now needs to take its course for these fish to rebuild their populations."

"We should be aware that low fishing pressure needs to be maintained until stocks recover," says Robin Cook of the University of Strathclyde. "This is only the first step. Now we need to see numbers increase as a result of continued low fishing pressure."

There is reason for continued caution as several stocks, cod in particular, remain in trouble. Under today's strongly enforced catch limits, too many fish that would have been sold on the black market continue to be caught and discarded.

The researchers relied on data collected largely by government research institutes, including large programs at hundreds of fish markets and at sea on hundreds of fishing and research vessels operating every day of the year. The data consist of millions of measurements of fish: their length, weight, sex, developmental stage, and estimated age. These data were then analyzed and integrated into mathematical stock assessment models and peer reviewed at the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES) in Denmark, which recommends catch levels to the European Commission.

Fernandes and Cook say they were especially surprised by the sheer number of stocks that have improved since fishing pressure was reduced at the turn of the century. In 2011, for the first time, the majority of fish stocks were being fished sustainably, the result of reforms put in place in 2002.

The findings come at an important time, when changes to the Common Fisheries Policy are anticipated.

"Further reforms to the Common Fisheries Policy are currently being developed, so it is important, when correcting its weaknesses, to also acknowledge and build on the success of a major reduction in the fishing pressure on European fish stocks," the researchers write.

Gadget in-extremis: DECam dark energy camera snaps redshifting General Gadget Master

Gadget in-extremis: DECam dark energy camera snaps redshifting General Gadget Master

2013/07/18

Decam 1Q: How many megapixels?
A: 570 megapixels!

The Dark Energy Camera (DECam) is now installed at the Blanco Telescope in Chile (see below), part of the Dark Energy Survey, reports New Scientist.

No ordinary camera, it captures light that has been stretched to higher wavelengths by the accelerating expansion of the universe. Apparently, cosmologists hope that studying this “redshifting” will reveal more about dark energy.

It consists of 74 CCDs and five lenses, biggest being almost 1 meter in diameter…

Jacob Aron writes:

DECam captures 570 megapixel images, about 100 times higher resolution than those taken by a typical smartphone, but the camera also has a wide view. A single image records an area of the sky 20 times larger than the moon as seen from Earth.

That’s not the only difference between DECam and more down-to-earth snappers.

Cylindrical controls called hexapods, which you can see sitting roughly in the middle of the camera, constantly tweak the camera’s focus to ensure a high image quality. The black box just to their left is a cartridge of swappable filters that let different wavelengths through.

Perhaps the only thing DECam can’t do is upload its snaps to Facebook in a single click.

Decam 2The Dark Energy survey team write:

The science requirements of the Dark Energy Survey drive the construction of a brand new camera. Named DECam, this large, 570 Megapixel camera will hold 74 CCDs constructed specifically to be sensitive to the redshifted light from distant galaxies and stars. DECam will have the widest field of view in the NOAO ground-based optical/infrared system of imagers. Its 2.2 degree field of view is so large that a single image will record data from an area of the sky 20 times the size of the moon as seen from earth. This wide field of view requires that DECam use a system of five lenses, each one uniquely shaped to correct a variety of optical aberrations, with the biggest of these lenses being almost 1 meter in diameter.
