瑞萨聚焦高阶MCU 全面退出8位元MCU市场

日本半导体大厂瑞萨电子(Renesas)持续聚焦高阶MCU市场,业界传出,瑞萨近来已对下游客户发出通知,将全面退出应用于遥控器的8位元MCU产品,预计不久之后即停止出货,国内MCU业者中以凌通(4952)受惠转单效应最高,盛群(6202)也将考虑重新卡位,不放过此机会。

继南韩三星电子退出8位元MCU(MicrocontrollerUnit,微控制器)市场后,全球MCU龙头厂瑞萨因持续进行业务整顿,聚焦获利事业,决定退出应用于遥控器的8位元MCU产品,瑞萨在该领域市占率超过50%,几乎处独霸地位,靠着IDM(IntegratedDeviceManufacturer,整合元件制造厂)营运模式,打出低价策略,击退不少台系厂商。

台厂准备接收订单

电视、音响、冷气等各种家电或者3C产品往往少不了遥控器,同时也有相当惊人售后市场,据统计每年遥控器市场规模高达20亿支,而每一台遥控器都需要一颗8位元的MCU,尽管属于低单价市场,但是数量相当可观。

瑞萨决定退出该市场,让台系竞争对手感到讶异,但也开始虎视眈眈准备抢攻接收。凌通主管即透露,已有不少客户询问,预料接下来将会掀起一波转单效应。

台系MCU厂商当中以凌通布局遥控器市场最积极,每年数出货超过数千万颗,并获得国际代工大厂的订单。凌通主管表示,目前出货的产品除了应用于一般的遥控器之外,也开始推出上面有显示萤幕的空调遥控器。

盛群本季营收恐降

凌通耕耘控制MCU产品线,除了遥控器之外,值得一提的是,凌通3年前开始出货给中国电动脚踏车eBike的马达控制IC以来,目前市占率已达30%,超过原本第1大供应商意法半导体。据悉,中国eBike一年的需求量超过3000万台,包含新车与维修市场。

盛群主管表示,当初进入遥控器市场,就是发现成本拼不过瑞萨,因此着墨不多,目前以学习型遥控器为主要应用,销售地区以欧洲为主。盛群表示,将进一步了解瑞萨后续的动作,不排除重新考虑卡位该市场。

谈到近期市况,盛群表示,9月接单出现回温,尤其是小家电电磁炉,更是呈现旺季水准,另外,应用于银行机构的产品也有大单敲进,整体而言,虽然第3季的营收将较第2季下滑,但仍可较去年同期成长。

盛群预计下月9日举行新产品发表会,将展出最新环境光源感测IC以及无线充电IC,另外,还有32位元相关产品,及近年来成长迅速的行动电源应用。

可穿戴式医疗设备可以用于对个人的生活和运动进行跟踪并提供数据共享。比如对日常跑步数据进行跟踪;判定老年人的跌倒是否造成了伤害;报告糖尿病患者的血糖水平;以及监测医院病人的心脏速率。

前段时间,因为生产了一个可穿戴的计步器,九安医疗5月大涨124%,秒杀其他上市公司;6月,美国可穿戴心脏检测医疗设备商CardioNet13个交易日走出107.17%的涨幅。业内相关人士分析:未来三到五年,可穿戴医疗市场价值将从30-50亿美元发展到约500亿美元,相当于10倍的空间。

可穿戴智能医疗设备可以持续跟踪患者后续情况,医生可以动态评价药物的疗效,及时跟踪患者的康复进展情况,发现潜在的风险因素。随着人们生活水平的不断提高,对健康的关注程度也会越来越高,医疗行业对的关注度会越来越大,其应用范围也会越来越广。

很多科技公司都在寻找新的交互方式,最近眼球追踪技术被炒得尤为火热,之前传闻谷歌正在申请pay-per-gaze (注视付费) 的广告收费形式新专利,Intel正在研发3D笔记本摄像头,可追踪眼球读懂人的情绪等等。而现在这一概念又催生了一款新产品--The Eye Tribe,它允许用户用眼神来操作自己的电脑,于今日开始发起预售。

与体感外设产品Kinect、Leap Motion等使用方式相同,The Eye Tribe通过USB 3.0与PC或平板连接,然后就可以取代鼠标的功能。它们的不同之处在于体感外设的操作方式是依靠肢体移动,而The Eye Tribe则是由眼球来操作,这似乎要比肢体操作酷的多。目前The Eye Tribe暂时只支持Windows 系统。

The Eye Tribe预售款将会附赠一个为开发者准备的SDK,方便开发者将眼球控制整合到他们的应用中,以便建立起一个稳固的生态圈,毕竟软件的普及才是关键。

The Eye Tribe从今日起开始预售,预售价格为99美元,最早将在今年圣诞节期间发货。

几日前,媒体已经曝光了Surface Pro 2的部分配置参数。随后媒体又曝出了微软将推出Surface mini的消息。认为微软的新品就此止步?千万别这么想。据悉,微软还将为消费者带来多款Surface的新配件,其中包括了能够为平板提供电力的Power Cover以及一个全新的插接口设备。

Power Cover

今年早些时候,微软曾在Reddit一个研讨会上透露,Surface Pro下方的一个插接口专门是为未来的外接设备所设计。现在,最新曝光的Power Cover则就是其中一个。

Power Cover从外形上来看,跟Type Cover基本一样,只是在它当中会内置一块电池,进而可以在跟Surface对接之后,为其供电。跟Surface一样,Power Cover也是支持充电功能。据悉,这款Cover的重量为520g,厚度为9.75mm,它可兼容现在的Surface Pro以及未来的Surface 2和Surface Pro 2。

插接口设备

外媒Paul Thurrott透露了新Surface的一款插接口设备。它的一个侧边有一个迷你DisplayPort和一个USB 3.0接口;背部则会有3个USB 2.0接口;对接边上则有一个1Gbps的Ethernet 接口、一个麦克风接口和一个耳机接口。据悉,这种Docking Station只兼容Surface Pro系列,它将在Surface 2和Pro 2发布之后发售。

美光与Altera成功验证HMC内存与FPGA互通性

Altera日前联合宣布,双方已经成功地验证了Altera的Stratix V FPGA电路与美光的HMC内存之间的互通性,这项技术将促使系统设计者在评估研发下一代通讯及高性能计算设备的FPGA及SoC处理器从HMC中获益,相关产品预计明年量产。

美光/Altera验证HMC内存与FPGA互通性

HMC(Hybrid Memory Cube,混合内存立方体)是美光、IBM、三星及后来加入的ARM、HP、Hynix、微软等公司联合开发的新一代超高速内存技术,它使用TSV(硅穿孔)技术堆叠多层DRAM芯片,大幅提高了内存的存储密度和速度,带宽是目前的DDR3标准的15倍,功耗减少了70%,而且占用空间减少了90%。2011年发布技术规范,当时四通道的带宽可达160-240GB/s,八通道时带宽高达320GB/s。

美光预计今年底开始出样HMC内存,2014年大规模量产HMC内存。

双方在声明中指出,Altera的28nm制程的Stratix V FPGA电路是HMC内存一个理想的互通性验证,因为它是目前世界上性能最好的FPGA电路,通过使用16条HMC通道,它可以充分发挥HMC内存的带宽、高效率和功耗比优势

Altera的Stratix V FPGA正在量产中,其中的Arria 10 预计会在2014年早些时候出样,使用14nm工艺的Stratix 10 FPGA预计在2013年进行测试,2014年提供软件支持,所以美光的HMC内存最快也要到明年才能开始量产上市了。

此外,Althera还是为数不多的Intel认可的代工客户之一,Intel的22nm 及14nm 3D晶体管工艺可不是想用就能用的。

9月6日消息,当手机没电之后,还可以暂时发送短信;当手机电池报废之后,手机还可以暂时保存位置:这些技术其实已经出现。那么,我们什么时候能买到手机,它能永远有电了呢?听起来,只有科幻小说中才有这样的手机。然而,这种理念已经出现在一项革命技术中,它叫Wysips,该技术能将人造光和太阳能转化为电能,从而保持移动设备一直有电。

将光线采集晶体放在手机、平板、智能手表屏幕之下或者之上,就可以将光线转为电能了。目前采用新技术的原型产品正在开发,光照10分钟,它可以让手机续航延长4分钟。

法国SunPartner集团正在努力提高转化率,它已经与其它企业签署协议,将技术用在未来的手机中。SunPartner专家称,太阳新能源技术和Wysips是光伏技术的代表。光伏技术能将太阳辐射转化为电能。SunPartner的办法就是将超薄的光电层放在微镜头网络之下,制造成透明薄片。Wysips晶体组件透明度达90%,人眼根本看不见。薄片不会影响手机的对比度、可阅读性、可视角度或者亮度。屏幕会将光线转化为电能,然后存储到手机的充电线圈,恰如手机插入电网或者连接到USB接口一样。早期版本的组件在阳光之下电能输出密度达2.5 mW/cm2,用光源照射10分钟就可以增加通信时间2-4分钟。如果薄片的透明度为60-70%,输出密度可以提高到10mW/cm2,相当于曝晒10分钟增加通信时间16分钟。

上个月,SunPartner与国内TCL合作,计划开发原型智能手机,第一款原型机可能会在2014年准备就绪。

传言称苹果将在iPhone 5S Home键下配置指纹识别传感器,不过在Home键下的指纹识别传感器似乎有一个问题。Home键通常被用来导航,比如点按Home键会从App中返回到主屏。指纹识别功能是一项认证功能,比如在线购物时,用户想要通过Home键进行指纹识别就不能意外的按到。

苹果在专利中提到了在Home键周围配置感应性光环,当检测到用户手指时就会亮起,用户也能很快知道自己的指纹是否正在被扫描而无需点按Home键。这种在Home键周围配置光环的方法与之前泄露的iPhone 5S包装上的图片很像。这意味着iPhone 5S的Home键很有可能将方形图案去掉,并在周围配置灰色圆环。

就像iPhone触控屏一样,Home键周围的光环也是感应性的,当手指靠近时就能检测到。此外,专利中还提到了通过NFC和光学输入/输出传感器实现下一代超快光纤Dock基站。当Home键加入了NFC技术,通过NFC技术用户可以实现很多功能。这种指纹识别和NFC混合按键还可以配置在其他设备上,比如MacBook和iPad以及iWatch等。甚至耳机、电视和遥控器上。

专利中的下一代基座解决方案将Lightning或USB线缆去除,采用了NFC或光纤传感器打造无线系统。这种无线基座系统使用Home键中的光纤传感器与Dock通信,这种Dock可以内置在Apple TV、车载信息娱乐系统中。iPhone可以横屏或竖屏插入,Home键会自动与Dock上的传感器进行通信,无需传统连接器。只是专利中没有提到如何为iOS设备供电。

专利中提到的种种技术可能都会出现在iPhone 5S中。这份专利在今年早些时候在欧洲递交,发明人是各种苹果工程师,其中还提到了苹果过去5年申请的各种指纹/NFC专利技术。

首批4G手机获工信部入网许可 全为TD-LTE模式

工信部近日发放了国内首批4G手机入网许可,值得注意的是,第一批获得许可的4部手机均为TD-LTE网络制式。

4部获得入网许可的TD-LTE手机分别来自三星、索尼、中兴和华为。手机型号为三星GT-N7108D、索尼M35T、中兴U9815、华为D2-6070。

和3G时代TD模式手机的匮乏,特别是初期缺少国际厂商参与的情况不同,首批4部手机就有三星和索尼参与其中。这或许对TD-LTE的发展产生良好促进。

而随着4G时代脚步临近,国内运营商在试验网建设等方面正在加快脚步。虽然4G牌照的发放日期仍无定论,但首批4部4G手机获入网许可,可以看作是4G牌照发放的前奏。

之前有传闻称4G牌照将会在今年十一国庆前后发放,最晚不会晚于年底。而关于TD牌照究竟会发几张,TD-LTE和LTE FDD是否都会在首批牌照发放之列,则一直没有明确结论。

从运营商传来的消息看,中国自主产权的TD-LTE标准可能会领先与国际标准LTE FDD获得建网牌照。而今天4部首批入网手机均为TD-LTE制式,似乎进一步证明了这一消息。

目前国内三家运营商中,中国移动是TD-LTE网络的坚定支持者。中国电信和中国联通在3G升级到4G的过程中,选择LTE FDD更符合两者的利益。若TD-LTE牌照先发,另外两家不排除租用中国移动的4G网络,或者与中国移动共建的可能性。

电动汽车充电设置标准通过专家审议

近日,在能源行业电动汽车充电设施标准化技术委员会一届四次会议上,审议通过了《电动汽车非车载充放电装置技术条件》等7项行业标准送审稿,研讨了电动汽车充电、换电、放电标准体系。

会议审查通过了《电动汽车非车载充放电装置技术条件》、《电动汽车电池更换站用充电机技术条件》、《电动汽车充换电设施运行管理规范》、《电动汽车智能充换电服务网络运营管理系统技术规范》、《电动汽车充电站初步设计内容深度规定》、《电动汽车充电设施供电系统技术规范》、《电动汽车充换电设施规划导则》7项标准送审稿,编写单位将根据专家审查意见作进一步修改后,报国家能源局批准发布并实施。

相关人士透露,标委会一届三次会议以来,初步形成了约58项标准的充换电标准体系,目前正在开展与电动汽车充电设施相关的批准计划项目共35项,其中,完成标准编制,已经上报有关部门的标准12项,送审稿7项,征求意见稿1项,大纲3项,准备阶段12项。关键标准的制定取得重要进展,重点围绕充换电设施建设关键标准开展工作,推动了充换电设施接口及通讯协议、充换电站建设、充电设施检验等领域的标准制定工作。在直流充电接口及通信协议、换电国际标准提案等方面取得突破。

海力士因火灾暂时停产 内存价格大涨

9月4日,SK海力士位于无锡的DRAM(内存芯片)工厂发生爆炸,虽然火灾已于当天下午扑灭,但该工厂的DRAM生产线却被迫中断。受此影响,连续阴跌的国际DRAM颗粒现货价格昨日出现大涨,但业内人士表示,此次火灾对芯片市场不会造成实际影响。

截至目前,SK海力士无锡工厂并未针对爆炸原因和受损情况进行披露。该工厂对外协理部一位相关人士透露,此次火灾对于后续产量的影响暂不好说,工厂恢复运营要一个星期左右。

外媒报道称,SK海力士发言人Seongae Park 指出,无锡厂有望在短期内恢复运作,整体供应量不会受到实质影响。无锡厂仅有一处些微受损,生产设备并无重大损害,至于起火原因则还在调查中。

韩国SK海力士是全球第二大DRAM制造商,截至2013年第二季度,该公司在全球DRAM市场的占有率为30%。据了解,SK海力士无锡厂每月晶圆投片量高达15万片,占全球DRAM供应约为12%~15%。而DRAM工厂是24小时运行,一旦发生火灾等事故,投入生产的晶片可能无法使用。有外媒报道称,全球DRAM大厂三星、美光及南科等相继暂停报价,并停止接单。

目前,正值PC、智能手机和平板电脑竞相推出新机抢市,因此,业界担忧此次火灾可能导致DRAM短期供应短缺,甚至造成DRAM现货价格飙升。

不过,一位芯片业界人士对记者分析,无锡海力士只从事测试封装环节的生产,火灾可能只会对设备和原材料造成损坏。如果火灾发生在台湾台积电工厂,则会对芯片价格影响大。

不过,DRAM现货价格以及相关企业二级市场的股价依然受到一定影响。集邦科技旗下DRAM价格网站显示,国际DRAM颗粒现货价格昨日出现大涨,2Gb DDR3颗粒涨价幅度从15.56%到17.28%不等。此外,移动设备闪存制造商SanDisk昨日股价大涨3.31%,美国最大的电脑内存芯片厂商美光科技也大涨5.3%。

Spread of crop pests threatens global food security as Earth warms

Sep. 1, 2013 — A new study has revealed that global warming is resulting in the spread of crop pests towards the North and South Poles at a rate of nearly 3 km a year.

The study, published in the journal Nature Climate Change and carried out by researchers at the University of Exeter and the University of Oxford, shows a strong relationship between increased global temperatures over the past 50 years and expansion in the range of crop pests.

Currently 10-16% of global crop production is lost to pests. Crop pests include fungi, bacteria, viruses, insects, nematodes, viroids and oomycetes. The diversity of crop pests continues to expand and new strains are continually evolving. Losses of major crops to fungi, and fungi-like microorganisms, amount to enough to feed nearly nine percent of today's global population. The study suggests that these figures will increase further if global temperatures continue to rise as predicted.

The spread of pests is caused by both human activities and natural processes but is thought to be primarily the result of international freight transportation. The study suggests that the warming climate is allowing pests to become established in previously unsuitable regions. For example, warming generally stimulates insect herbivory at higher latitudes as seen in outbreaks of the Mountain pine beetle (Dendroctonus ponderosae) that has destroyed large areas of pine forest in the US Pacific Northwest. In addition, the rice blast fungus which is present in over 80 countries, and has a dramatic effect both on the agricultural economy and ecosystem health, has now moved to wheat. Considered a new disease, wheat blast is sharply reducing wheat yields in Brazil.

Dr Dan Bebber from the University of Exeter said: "If crop pests continue to march polewards as Earth warms the combined effects of a growing world population and the increased loss of crops to pests will pose a serious threat to global food security."

Professor Sarah Gurr from the University of Exeter (previously at the University of Oxford) said: "Renewed efforts are required to monitor the spread of crop pests and to control their movement from region to region if we are to halt the relentless destruction of crops across the world in the face of climate change."

The study used published observations of the distribution of 612 crop pests collected over the past 50 years. It revealed that the movement of pests north and south towards the poles, and into new previously un-colonised regions, corresponds to increased temperatures during that period.

Solar energy: A richer harvest on the horizon

Aug. 31, 2013 — Semiconductor nanostructures are poised to play a big role in future solar-powered hydrogen generation systems, according to a new study by researchers at the A*STAR Institute of High Performance Computing1. Hui Pan and Yong-Wei Zhang report that model interfaces made from gallium nitride (GaN) and zinc oxide (ZnO) semiconductors have tunable magnetic and light-harvesting capabilities -- factors that can greatly improve the photocatalytic transformation of water into hydrogen fuel.

Most photoelectrochemical cells use titanium dioxide electrodes to absorb light and split water molecules into hydrogen and oxygen gas. But because this mineral has a large bandgap -- a measure of energy needed to initiate photoreactions -- these devices respond only to a tiny fraction of the solar spectrum. A promising way to boost this efficiency is with 'superlattice' materials that stack two different semiconductors into alternate, nanometer-thin layers. The two-dimensional channels that emerge from superlattices resemble conductive nanowires for swift charge-carrier movement. Bandgaps in these hetero-nanostructures have a demonstrated dependence on semiconductor composition and layer thickness.

Pan and Zhang investigated superlattices based on stacked GaN and ZnO layers, two semiconductors with similar electronic and structural properties that are widely used in optoelectronic devices. Using density functional theory calculations, they optimized a periodic GaN-ZnO model superlattice (see image). These computations, which describe the charge and electron spin states of materials, showed that the two semiconductor layers formed crystalline nanowire arrangements with no magnetic characteristics.

The duo then systematically introduced small defects -- atomic substitutions that slightly disrupt semiconductor crystallinity -- into the GaN-ZnO superlattice. To Pan and Zhang's surprise, they observed significant magnetism at several types of defect interface. According to Pan, this extraordinary activity is due to 'polar discontinuities' that form when positively charged defects partially neutralize negative charges at Ga-O interface points. Unpaired electrons then accumulate around Zn-N connections and generate magnetic forces that can boost charge separation and mobility during the reaction known as photocatalysis.

The researchers also found that engineered polar discontinuities could significantly alter semiconductor bandgaps by generating intermediate energy levels. These zones act as 'stepping stones' that make it easier for photons, or light-transmitting particles, to excite electrons for water-splitting reactions. Pan notes that once these intriguing properties of GaN-ZnO nanostructures are verified through laboratory studies, the materials may find application in energy-harvesting solar cells. "If this design proves efficient in both theory and experiment, we would then look for commercial applications by collaborating with industry," he says.

Aug. 31, 2013 — Scientists have recently started to explore the possibility of using an intrinsic property of the electron known as spin for processing and storing information. Magnetic fields can influence the dynamics of electron spin, so harnessing this potential relies on precision engineering of crystalline storage materials. Chee Kwan Gan and co‐workers at the A*STAR Institute of High Performance Computing and the A*STAR Data Storage Institute in Singapore have used theoretical calculations to show how the magnetic characteristics of specific materials can be controlled at the atomic level.

Their results could lead to novel magnetic recording devices.

One promising route to such spintronic devices is to design structures consisting of alternating layers of different magnetic atoms. The strength of the magnetic influence is stronger in the direction of the multilayer stack than it is parallel to the planes of the atoms. This so-called perpendicular magnetic anisotropy is useful for spintronic memory devices because it allows a greater storage density than a conventional electronic device.

The properties of these structures, however, are highly sensitive to the precise arrangement of the crystal. Just one misplaced layer of atoms -- a stacking fault -- can noticeably alter device performance (see image). Previous studies usually ignored these special defects, "but nature sometimes makes 'mistakes'," explains Gan. "It is important to understand these defects and subsequently use them to control the material's physical properties."

Gan and his team went back to basics to better understand how atom-level imperfections affect the properties of these multilayers. They used a powerful mathematical approach known as density functional theory. This approach uses only fundamental equations from quantum mechanics to model the behavior of electrons in these structures, without requiring any prior assumptions.

The researchers modeled a material consisting of alternating layers of cobalt and palladium atoms. Multilayers of these atoms have previously exhibited a large perpendicular magnetic anisotropy when the cobalt layers are less than 0.8 nanometers thick. Gan and co-workers then assessed how stacking faults and the ratio of cobalt to palladium atoms affected this anisotropy. Their results showed that a stacking fault could enhance the magnetic anisotropy in structures with a relatively thick cobalt layer. They also found that the anisotropy increased almost linearly with increasing cobalt content.

High magnetic anisotropy materials have potential for use in the next generation of ultrafast and high-capacity magnetic random-access memory, Gan explains. The improved understanding of these materials from this research will guide the way to realizing such devices.

High dose statins prevents dementia, study suggests

Dr Lin said: "Statins are widely used in the older population to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease. But recent reports of statin-associated cognitive impairment have led the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to list statin-induced cognitive changes, especially for the older population, in its safety communications."

He added: "Previous studies had considered statin therapy to exert a beneficial effect on dementia. But few large-scale studies have focused on the impact of statins on new-onset, non-vascular dementia in the geriatric population."

Accordingly, the current study examined whether statin use was associated with new diagnoses of dementia. The researchers used a random sample of 1 million patients covered by Taiwan's National Health Insurance. From this they identified 57,669 patients aged >65 years who had no history of dementia in 1997 and 1998. The analysis included pre-senile and senile dementia but excluded vascular dementia.

There were 5,516 new diagnoses of dementia during approximately 4.5 years of follow-up. The remaining 52,153 patients aged >65 formed the control group. Subjects were divided into tertiles according to their mean daily equivalent1 dosage and total (across the entire follow up period) equivalent dosage.

The adjusted hazard ratios (HRs) for dementia were significantly inversely associated with increased daily or total equivalent statin dosage. The HRs for the three tertiles of mean equivalent daily dosage (lowest to highest) were 0.622, 0.697 and 0.419 vs control (p<0.001 for trend). The HRs for the three tertiles of total equivalent dosage (lowest to highest) were 0.773, 0.632 and 0.332 vs control (p<0.001 for trend). The protective effect of statins remained in different age, gender and cardiovascular risk subgroups.

Dr Lin said: "The adjusted risks for dementia were significantly inversely associated with increased total or daily equivalent statin dosage. Patients who received the highest total equivalent doses of statins had a 3-fold decrease in the risk of developing dementia. Similar results were found with the daily equivalent statin dosage."

He added: "It was the potency of the statins rather than their solubility (lipophilic or hydrophilic) which was a major determinant in reducing dementia. High potency statins such as atorvastatin and rosuvastatin showed a significant inverse association with developing dementia in a dose-response manner. Higher doses of high potency statins gave the strongest protective effects against dementia."

Dr Lin continued: "The results were consistent when analysing daily doses of different kinds of statins. Almost all the statins (except lovastatin) decreased the risk for new onset dementia when taken at higher daily doses. A high mean daily dosage of lovastatin was positively associated with the development of dementia, possibly because lovastatin is a lipophilic statin while the anti-inflammatory cholesterol lowering effect of lovastatin is not comparable to that of atorvastatin and simvastatin."

Dr Lin concluded: "To the best of our knowledge, this was the first large-scale, nation-wide study which examined the effect of different statins on new onset dementia (except vascular dementia) in an elderly population. We found that high doses of statins, particularly high potency statins, prevent dementia."

Sea-level rise drives shoreline retreat in Hawaii

The authors of the work point out that knowing that SLR is a primary cause of shoreline change on a regional scale allows managers and other coastal zone decision-makers to target SLR impacts in their research programs and long-term planning. This study is confirmation that future SLR is a major concern for decision-makers charged with managing beaches.

"It is common knowledge among coastal scientists that sea level rise leads to shoreline recession," stated Dr. Brad Romine, coastal geologist with the University of Hawaii Sea Grant College Program. "Shorelines find an equilibrium position that is a balance between sediment availability and rising ocean levels. On an individual beach with adequate sediment availability, beach processes may not reflect the impact of SLR. With this research we confirm the importance of SLR as a primary driver of shoreline change on a regional to island-wide basis."

Globally-averaged sea-level rose at about 2 mm per year over the past century. Previous studies indicate that the rate of rise is now approximately 3 mm per year and may accelerate over coming decades. The results of the recent publication show that SLR is an important factor in historical shoreline change in Hawaii and will be increasingly important with projected SLR acceleration in this century. "Improved understanding of the influence of SLR on historical shoreline trends will aid in forecasting beach changes with increasing SLR," said Dr. Charles Fletcher, Associate Dean and Professor of Geology and Geophysics at the UHM SOEST.

"The research being conducted by SOEST provides us with an opportunity to anticipate SLR effects on coastal areas, including Hawaii's world famous beaches, coastal communities, and infrastructure. We hope this information will inform long range planning decisions and allow for the development of SLR adaptation plans," said Sam Lemmo, Administrator, Department of Land and natural Resources, Office of Conservation and Coastal Lands.

Results of island-wide historical trends indicate that Maui beaches are significantly more erosional than beaches on Oahu. On Maui, 78% of beaches eroded over the past century with an overall (island-wide) average shoreline change rate of 13 cm of erosion per year, while 52% of Oahu beaches eroded with an overall average shoreline change rate of 3 cm of erosion per year.

The variation in long-term relative SLR rates along the Hawaii archipelago is due, in large part, to variations in island subsidence with distance from actively growing Hawaii Island and/or variations in upper ocean water masses. The islands of Oahu and Maui, Hawaii, with significantly different rates of localized sea-level rise (SLR has been approximately 65% higher rate on Maui) over the past century, provided a natural laboratory to investigate possible relations between historical shoreline changes and SLR.

Island-wide and regional historical shoreline trends were calculated for the islands using shoreline positions measured from aerial photographs and survey charts. Shoreline positions were manually digitized using photogrammetric and geographic information system (GIS) software from aerial photo mosaics and topographic and hydrographic survey charts provided by the National Ocean Service (NOS). Shoreline movement through time was measured using GIS software. Historical shoreline data were optimized to reduce anthropogenic influences (e.g., constructing seawalls or sand mining) on shoreline change measurements. The researchers controlled for influences other than SLR to determine if SLR remains as the best explanation for observed changes. They also utilized a series of consistency checks to determine if results are significant and to eliminate other possible explanations.

Sideline teleconcussion robot to be tested at football games

Mayo Clinic will be working with NAU to test the feasibility of using a telemedicine robot to assess athletes with suspected concussions during football games as part of a research study. With sophisticated robotic technology, use of a specialized remote controlled camera system allows patients to be "seen" by the neurology specialist, miles away, in real time. During the study, the robot equipped with a specialized camera system, remotely operated by a Mayo Clinic neurologist located in Phoenix who has the ability to assess a player for symptoms and signs of a concussion and to consult with sideline medical personnel.

The first time the robot will be used in a game is this Friday, Aug. 30 when NAU kicks off its season against the University of Arizona in Tucson at 7 p.m. (MST).

"Athletes at professional and collegiate levels have lobbied for access to neurologic expertise on the sideline. As we seek new and innovative ways to provide the highest level of concussion care and expertise, we hope that teleconcussion can meet this need and give athletes at all levels immediate access to concussion experts," said Bert Vargas, M.D., a neurologist at Mayo Clinic who is heading up the research.

This study would be the first to explore whether a remote neurological assessment is as accurate as a face-to-face evaluation in identifying concussion symptoms and making return to play decisions. Mayo Clinic physicians will not provide medical consultations during the study, they will only assess the feasibility of using the technology. If it appears feasible, this may open the door for countless schools, athletic teams, and organizations without access to specialized care to use similar portable technology for sideline assessments.

"As nearly 60 percent of U.S. high schools do not have access to an athletic trainer, youth athletes, who are more susceptible to concussion and its after-effects, have the fewest safeguards in place to identify possible concussion signs and symptoms at the time of injury, Dr. Vargas says. "Teleconcussion is one way to bridge this gap regardless of when or where they may be playing."

Others involved collegiate sports agree.

"At NAU, our primary goal is to provide an outstanding student-athlete experience culminating in graduation," says Dr. Lisa Campos, vice president for Intercollegiate Athletics at Northern Arizona University. "We charge our staff to research the most current and best practices to ensure the safety and care of our students. Partnering with the Mayo Clinic in its telemedicine study will further this research and potentially improve diagnosis for rural areas that may not have access to team doctors or neurologists. The study allows the NAU Sports Medicine Staff and team doctors to continue to make all diagnoses and return to play decisions for our students, while investigating the effectiveness and efficiencies of telemedicine. We are excited to have the teleconcussion robot on our sideline this fall."

"There were a number of examples last football season where college football players clearly demonstrating concussion-like symptoms were quickly thrown back in games or weren't even taken out of the game for an evaluation," said Ramogi Huma, executive director of the National College Players Association. "College football players are in desperate need for independent concussion experts on the sidelines, and this study could help make that safeguard a reality."

Mayo Clinic in Arizona first used telemedicine technology with the telestroke program in 2007, when statistics revealed that 40 percent of residents in Arizona did not live in an area where they were availed of stroke expertise. Mayo Clinic was the first medical center in Arizona to do pioneering clinical research to study telemedicine as a means of serving patients with stroke in non-urban settings, and today serves as the "hub" in a network of 12 "spoke" centers, all but one in Arizona. Since the telestroke program began nearly 3,000 emergency consultations for neurological emergencies like stroke between Mayo neurologists and physicians at the spoke centers have taken place.

In 2011, Mayo Clinic expanded its telemedicine evaluations to include concussion evaluations. Concussion experts at the Mayo Clinic Comprehensive Concussion Program in Arizona coined the term "teleconcussion" and described the concept as an effective means to assess concussed patients in a case study published in the December 2012 issue of Telemedicine and e-Health.

"Teleconcussion is an excellent new example of connected care in action, as athletes with suspected concussion, anywhere and anytime, can be effectively connected to Mayo Clinic concussion knowledge and expertise," says Bart Demaerschalk, M.D., co-author of study, Director of Mayo Clinic Teleneurology and Telestroke, and Chair of American Academy of Neurology Telemedicine Work Group.
